چکیده

Some of the most ’active’ galaxies in the Universe are obscured by large quantities of dust and emit a substantial fraction of the bolometric luminosity in the infrared. Observations of these infrared luminous galaxies with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) has provided a relatively unabsorbed view to the sources fueling this active emission. The improved sensitivity, spatial resolution and spectroscopic capability of ISO over its predecessor Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS), enabled significant advances in the understanding of the infrared properties of active galaxies. ISO surveyed a wide range of active galaxies which, in the context of this review, includes those powered by intense bursts of star-formation as well as those containing a dominant active galactic nucleus (AGN). Mid infrared imaging resolved for the first time the dust enshrouded nuclei in many nearby galaxies, while a new era in infrared spectroscopy was opened by probing a wealth of atomic, ionic and molecular lines as well as broad band features in the mid and far infrared. This was particularly useful since it resulted in the understanding of the power production, excitation and fueling mechanisms in the nuclei of active galaxies including the intriguing but so far elusive ultraluminous infrared galaxies. Detailed studies of various classes of AGN and quasars greatly improved our understanding of the unification scenario. Far-infrared imaging and photometry also revealed the presence of a new very cold dust component in galaxies and furthered our knowledge of the far-infrared properties of faint starbursts, ULIGs and quasars. We summarize almost nine years of key results based upon ISO data spanning the full range of luminosity and type of

Comparing Chandra and Sirtf Observations for Obscured Starbursts and Agn at High Redshift

Tracking the star formation rate to high redshifts requires knowledge of the contribution from both optically visible and obscured sources. The dusty, optically-obscured galaxies can be located by X-ray and infrared surveys. To establish criteria for selecting such sources based only on X-ray and infrared surveys, we determine the ratio of infrared to X-ray brightness that would be observed by ...

OPTICAL SPECTROSCOPY OF THE IRAS 1-Jy SAMPLE OF ULTRALUMINOUS INFRARED GALAXIES

This paper discusses the optical spectroscopic properties of the IRAS 1-Jy sample (f60 > 1 Jy) of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs: Lir > 10 12 L⊙; Ho = 75 km s −1 Mpc and qo = 0). One hundred and eight of the 118 1-Jy ULIGs have been observed at ∆λ = 8.3 Å resolution over the wavelength range ∼ 4500 Å – 8900 Å. These data are combined with large, previously published sets of optical spec...

Long Wavelength View

Far-infrared spectroscopy obtained with the ISO LWS has shown that there is strong variation (more than 2 orders of magnitude) in the [C II]/FIR ratios in galaxies extending from blue compact dwarfs, to normal and starburst galaxies, down to elliptical and ultraluminous galaxies (ULIGs). The variation in the relative [C II] 158 µm line strength has been attributed to low metallicity in blue com...

High Resolution Tip/Tilt Near-Infrared Imaging of Warm Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies

We present high spatial resolution (FWHM ≈ 0.3–0.5) H (1.6μm) and K (2.1μm) images of a complete sample (12) of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs) chosen to have “warm” mid-infrared colors (f25/f60 > 0.2) known to be characteristic of active galaxies. The extended underlying galaxy is detected in each system at H and K , as are tidal features and many of the star forming knots seen at opti...

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...
